The SMG system was designed to improve performance, reduce cost and improve reliability of the typical internal combustion engine (ICE) through the integration of a multi-purpose electromechanical machine (motor/alternator) in conjunction with engine flywheel. This system will start the engine, generate 42 VDC accessory power, and provide power boost. The SMG system provides the following features:

  • Reduced cost by removal of the separate bolt-on starter and alternator and associated brackets and mountings
  • Improved reliability by eliminating drive belts, gears and power cables
  • Higher starting speed to improve starting ability and eliminate cold starting issues
  • Reduce emissions through power boost at high torque and power conditions
  • Reduce or eliminate idling time
  • Improve performance through short-term power boost
  • Product simplification through fewer parts and simplified assembly
  • Increased alternator output and efficiency
  • Starting torque increases as temperature decreases
